India Delegation

INDIA DELEGATION
In December 2009, Reena SenGupta was invited on an Asian Women of Achievement delegation to India, hosted and organised by Vicki Treadell, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Mumbai. The delegation met with female business leaders such as Chandra Kochar, the first ever female CEO of ICICI Bank and Dr Swati Piramal, the driving force behind Piramal Industries, a leading Indian leading lifesciences company. The week culminated with Cherie Blair's 'Women mean Business' conference, the first time such an event has even been organised in India.

It was not all business though. The delegation was privileged to meet outstanding social entrepreneurs and activists such as Dr Kiran Mithur, the woman who founded ADAPT - a project that helps educate children who are disenfranchised by poverty and disability. Like many of the other women behind these projects, Dr Mithur faces challenges everyday to achieve her goals. Some of her schools in Daravi slum have over 40 kids learning basic skills in rooms that are less than 9ft by 6ft square. But they thrive thanks to the passion and commitment of the volunteers, who themselves have overcome the odds of back-breaking labour to become teachers.
